There seems to be a lot of confusion about the time before the flood. The bible only gives bits and pieces covering the life and fall of Adam and Eve, the account of Cain and Abel, the age of the people and Noah building the ark. There are many theories about that time. Here is one of them.

GOD told Adam if he ate the forbidden fruit he would die, but when he ate the fruit, he did not die as we see death however the instant he ate the fruit, he died spiritually and died physically in less than a thousand years, (one of GOD’S days). So he did die both ways when he rebelled against GOD and ate the fruit.
