I worked 2 jobs in high school. It was a DISD high school and I was fortunate to academically qualify for something called the Executive Assistant Program.

I became the proud intern of a KERA weekly news program called The Morning Edition, with Bob Ray Sanders and Mia Squilla. For 2 years I accompanied the cameraman to on the scene tapings, learned how to cut and splice videotape for editing, was present on the sidelines for all live shows, and even produced a piece on Ross Perot’s No Pass No Play rule adopted by UIL. I also worked at Judy’s clothes store in Town East Mall. You know, the store that Charlene Tilton walked out of during the opening scenes on Dallas? Sure, Lucy Ewing filmed her scene downtown, but hey, same store. I was on top of the world. I tell you all of this so you’ll see the arrogance and naivety of the average teenager. A month before my graduation, the internship ended. What was a girl to do with a free half day M-F? She bought a season pass to Wet & Wild in Garland and wore a hot pink ruffled bikini to the giant wave pool every single day. Life was grand.
