What is now a globally recognized event with countries all over the world participating, Black Friday continues to break records in America each year. In 2017, it is reported that U.S. shoppers spent an estimated $7.9 billion in roughly 24 hours, with approximately $1 billion going to online retail giant Amazon alone.
As the unofficial kickoff for the holiday shopping season in a consumerdriven culture, it’s not entirely surprising that more Americans shopped during the weekend of Black Friday 2017 than turned out to vote in the 2016 presidential election (174 million shoppers vs. 138 million voters). So despite any debates as to the morality of shopping on Thanksgiving Day or as to the growing epidemic of consumerism and resulting debt in our culture, there is no denying the impact that this phenomenon has on the American economy.
