Back “in the day” Kaufman and Forney was considered a rivalry game. It’s been years since they played each other on the gridiron. At least 14 as far as this reporter knows. The rivalry was renewed this last Friday night as the Forney Jackrabbits made their way south on 175 to face the Kaufman Lions in the last game of the regular season. Kaufman has already wrapped up a playoff spot for this year, while Forney needed a win and some help. Unfortunately, none of those things happened as Kaufman held on to win 28-26. Kaufman finishes the season at 6-2 in District play and the Jackrabbits finish at 2-6.

Senior Lions Quarterback, Safety, Punter and Kick Returner Trey Collier opened the scoring for the Lions on their first possession with a 3 yard touchdown run, capping off a very fast 64 yard drive after Forney turned the ball over on downs in Kaufman territory. Collier showed his speed on the first play of the drive, rushing for 42 yards through the Jackrabbit defense.

Forney answered by moving the ball quickly themselves. The second Jackrabbit drive started with a 26 yard Campbell Anderson pass to Riley McMurren and ended with a 21 yard run by Senior Running Back Sean Stephens. Stephens’ touchdown and the extra point by Senior Placekicker Matthew Huffman tied the score at 7 halfway through a very cold first quarter.
