Not long ago, I received a call from Jeff at the Messenger, wondering if I knew Mr. Richard Dodd and saying that I ought to check out the action at his Barber Shop on Pinson Road. I answered, “Yes, I know him and his wife, and I taught his two children, both good students. I will see what’s up.” And so, I headed on over!
Arriving, I noticed some decorations inside and out, refreshments inside, and found out that he was celebrating a momentous occasion— the CELEBRATION OF HIS 50th YEAR AS A BARBER. Being nearly FIFTY YEARS and no intention of slowing down! Richard Dodd—carrying on the family “BARBERING” tradition that old myself (his children, as do all my former students, know I am now 46 years of age.), I marveled that he could have been working at the same job this long, look and act as young as he does, and still smilingly go about his work each day, while also engaging customers in conversation filled with dry humor and philosophy at times.
