When did we stop being proud of our work? It used to be understood that our lives had purpose and we were to produce something to the very best of our abilities, be it corn, music or another person. Sure, there’s more to life than work, but without work, there is no life. In the past, most people worked long and hard just to survive because our “betters” kept taking the lion’s share of whatever we managed to scratch together.

Then American ideal was born which stated that we have no “betters”. We are all equal, in opportunity at least, and we’re supposed to benefit from the fruits of our labors. It’s a brilliant plan. People will work really hard when they get to enjoy what they produced. And their work enriches not only them, but their families, communities and future generations.

But people have a tendency to be lazy. They want the fruits without the toil. And they get them, through lies and intimidation. The biggest lie is that we are somehow too good for work. It’s an evil that quickly infects others and something I see often in my office.
