When the day of Pentecost came and the Holy Spirit entered into the 120 Christians who were in the upper room, they spoke with other tongues which they did not know. That was a sign that they were truly born again Christians. After that, that was one of the signs people displayed when they accepted Jesus Christ as their personal savior. That sign proved that person had become a Christian. There were other signs but speaking in other languages was the most apparent.
When GOD opened the door of salvation to the gentiles, tongues were a sure signs that they had been born again. As time went on, many gentile Churches began to spring up throughout the Roman Empire. Some Jews had all kinds of ideas of how the gentiles should act or believe in Christian service in the Church and in their lives. The arguments that took place got the attention of Paul and he decided he had better straighten it out to prevent damage to the gospel and all the Churches.
