Once in a great while we will see a big cloud of red dust coming from west Texas. It is a dreaded inconvenience when it happens and thankfully it doesn’t happen often, but it could happen more often, a lot more often. The dust storms were horrible when I lived in Abilene in the mid 70s. One spring day, the weather was nice and warm so I put on a pair of short pants and running shoes and went for a long jog with no shirt on. I got about two miles away when I saw the dreaded red wall of sand descending on Abilene from the West. It caught me before I could get back while I was covered with sweat. I must have been a sight as every exposed inch of skin and even my shorts were covered with red, sweaty mud. It was an experience I would never care to repeat. There are some showers that are especially memorable and I have to say that day I had one terrific shower.
