John, (not his real name) was a grade ahead of me and lived about a mile away. His mom and dad were divorced but lived near one another. Both of them ran Jewelry stores. His dad ran the store downtown and his mom ran a jewelry store by his house. Sometimes we would spend time at his mom’s and sometimes with his dad. His mom’s house was a source of endless adventure. She had a huge storm cellar. Give two boys with a lot of imagination and that by itself was a pretty great deal. But John and I loved to go exploring. We found an old dilapidated two-story house that was overgrown with trees and vines. There was little furniture left in the house but a lot of boxes had been left behind by some long-gone occupant. We would find some of the coolest things like toys and 78 records. Many of which we would set up in a row and shoot with BB guns….of course. John’s mom would feed us like kings. The really weird thing was that John had an older sister….a much older sister, and he was an uncle… with a kid his own age for a nephew. Jason would play with us and at least John cut him some slack and didn’t insist on making Jason call him “Uncle John”.
