My wife and I arrived home at about 3:30 a. m. Sunday, and at 8:56 a. m. this e-mail from “basketball buddy Harry” appeared upon my computer screen: “Hey man. We won our opening game in the Regional Qualifying Tournament. Beat #4 Seed Ft. Lewis State, 78— 62. We play West Texas A&M today in the Semis. Go Lions!”
Needless to say, I was ecstatic, but sleepy, and also apprehensive, since West Texas State is the #1 Seed in this Tournament and had defeated “us” and stopped our advance in the recently finished Lone Star Conference Tournament, where they were also the #1 Seed.
78—62, #5 Seed LIONS defeated Fort Lewis for 1st NCAA Tourney win since 2005 by running up a large first half lead and never letting up at this game played in Canyon, Texas, home of their next opponent. This moves the season record of the Commerce Men to 22—8 and finishes the Fort Lewis season record at 24—7.
