I grew up in an unincorporated area of Dallas County, smack dab between Seagoville and Combine. We lived in the country, sans public water or sewer. My father dug a well for us, by hand, using a complicated system of interlocking concrete cylinders, a wooden platform, ropes, and a bucket. People lined up for miles around to watch Ted Stilwell, the man who could do anything, tackle this dangerous, heart pounding feat. It worked. That well supplied us with water for my entire 18 years and supplied the next family for quite some time, too. What does every hand dug well need, you ask? It needs a house: a teeny, tiny well house. After all, where else would you keep your industrial sized bags of rock salt for the water softening system? But, on to the story.
