Early this month I attended the bi-annual meeting at The Churches OF Christ Disaster Relief Effort where all five Associate Directors go to our offices in Nashville to meet with our Executive Director and his assistant as well as the President of the Board. I fully expected that 2017 would be the biggest year in our history because of Hurricanes: Harvey, Irma and Maria. We sent out nearly $11 Million in retail to disaster victims. However on the same report I was reminded that in 2016 we sent out nearly $13 Million.
I realized that if I was taken aback so would the average person who isn’t involved in disaster relief. The reason is simple. In 2016 Louisiana and Southeast Texas were deluged with flooding The fact is that floods barely make the news and the time they are covered is pretty short. Whereas Hurricanes are in the news for a very long time. So even my perception was wrong.
