There is a position at our Church that doesn’t appear on a budget or list of Church officials but he is important none the less. It is the Church “Candyman”. When I was a kid I really didn’t think about it much. I just knew that every Sunday, one of our Elders would bring candy for us kids at Church. His name was Homer Barber and he was the owner of Barber Oil Company in Floresville, Texas. At first he would carry a pocket full of “Double Bubble Gum” in his pockets and give it to all of the kids. Our congregation grew, and before long there were to many kids for his pocket distribution system to supply. So somewhere along the line Homer would buy a box full of Double Bubble and put it under the seat of his car. I have to say that looking back I’m a little embarrassed to say that we kids couldn’t wait until the final prayer, because we knew what was next. We would keep our heads respectfully bowed until the final Amen, then we would run down the isles and through the doors to the parking lot and converged on Homer’s car like a band of pirates on a chest full of plunder. I don’t know why we were in such a hurry because we would always go to great pains to make sure the booty was divided evenly. We would decide who got there first and each subsequent arrivee, Then we would distribute one at a time until all of the gum was gone.
