Much of the land of Canaan had been taken and assigned to the tribes of Israel. Joshua is now old and soon will die. As long as Joshua was leading the Children of Israel were willing to follow, and after Joshua died they followed the Elders who outlived Joshua. After they too died the Children of Israel drifted away from GOD and started to mix with the nations around them. GOD then raised up Judges to lead Israel back to the right way following Him. As long as the Judge was alive Israel would follow him, but when he died they went back to their old ways.
There are many lessons to learn about the path of the Children of Israel, but the one we want tao look at the most is “leadership”. (Or lack of leadership). We all must make decisions all day every day. Making decisions is work, because we have to think and ponder the result. Israel, like us today, did not like to make decisions. They wanted a leader who would tell them what to do that would bring them peace of mind and the good life.
