After GOD caused water to come out of the rock and Israel was satisfied, AMALEK came and attacked Israel. This was the first time Israel was forced into battle since they came out Egypt. Moses told Joshua to select men from Israel and go out to fight with AMALEK. Moses took two men, Aaron and Hur with him and went up to the top of a nearby mountain. Moses took the staff which Aaron used to strike the river Nile and turn it to blood. Moses took the staff and held it over his head so GOD could show the power He had imparted to Moses.
When Moses held his hands up Israel was winning the war, but when he let the staff down, AMALEK was winning. When Moses became tired and could not hold his arms up Aaron and Hur stood on both sides of Moses and held his arms up, so Israel won the war. Then GOD told Moses to write this as a memorial and recite it to Joshua, for I will blot out the memory of AMALEK from under Heaven.
