A public debate has been going on for at least the past year regarding what to do with monuments in public places that were erected to commemorate or honor the Confederacy or Confederate historical figures. As I write, the debate seems to have tipped in favor of removing such monuments.

The argument goes that because the Confederacy was formed to protect the institution of slavery, anything commemorating the Confederacy or the people who defended it during the Civil War should go. Already, many statues or other reminders of the Confederacy have been taken down across the country.
