In the spring of 1977 I left College at Abilene Christian University as a student, but I didn’t go far. I got a construction job as an air conditioning installation man at the new communications building on campus. I couldn’t leave because there was no doubt that Lori would finish college and I wanted to stick around. However, when school let out she had to go home to California for summer break and I began the transition from student to full-time working man.

That was the first summer I ever spent in Abilene and with my college friends all gone I saw things from a new perspective. I made new friends, the company I worked for was based in Midland, so most of my co-workers went home for weekends. Most of the people I hung out with were “townies” from Abilene. I learned what the locals do for fun through the hot West Texas summers. One weekend some friends invited me to go to “Lueders” which wasn’t far away by Abilene standards, a mere 33 miles. We drove to a spot along the highway where there were several cars parked that lent few clues of what was nearby. So with towels, a radio and sunscreen we crossed a barbwire fence and headed down a trail through the Mesquite trees to the Clear Fork of The Brazos River.
