Israel is now in Egypt and multiplying like the promise GOD gave to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob to make their descendants like the stars of Heaven in number. For the next 420 plus years they multiplied until the Egyptians became afraid they would overrun Egypt and take over the country. A Pharaoh arose that did not know Joseph and what he did for Egypt during the dearth and ordered the soldiers to oppress the men of Israel and force them into hard labor like slaves to keep them from multiplying so fast. GOD intervened and made them multiply is spite of their oppression. Israel began to call upon GOD to deliver them from the slavery.
