Americans celebrated Presidents Day Monday, and as I thought about its significance, I had a few ideas I felt were worth writing about. The Constitution provides what I think of as the underpinnings of American democracy—the glue that holds our system of government and way of life together. They are the right to vote, freedom of expression, and freedom of religion. The right to vote should be held dear by Americans, because few other nations afford so many of their citizens the privilege of electing government officials by secret ballot without fear of reprisal. Take away this fundamental right, and democracy as we know it would collapse almost literally overnight.
