Fox News reported a significant addition, actually a return, to academics in Texas. According to the State Board of Education, in 2017, it was decided that cursive writing would be added back to the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) effective in the 2019-2020 school year. Second grade students will need to master cursive writing by the fourth grade. Reportedly, the rationale for the decision is that cursive writing improves hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills. Cursive writing proponents have scored a win.
I welcome the return of cursive writing and value the ability to read and write material that is handwritten. However, I question the return of cursive writing when reading remains an area of concern in schools everywhere.
