The Teachers’ Lounge
Even though school is almost out for the summer, students could potentially benefit from continued learning over their summer breaks. In cases where students are behind academically, continued learning over the summer should not be considered optional, but rather strongly encouraged to help learners catch up as much as possible in preparation for the upcoming school year.
Parents who are interested in keeping their children busy over the summer break with academic activities have a broad selection of free and paid resources available on the internet and from their children’s teachers. Available to parents are countless worksheets, videos, interactive websites and community learning opportunities. The Texas Education Agency also has wonderful information available to the public on its website.
Among my favorites are the learning opportunities at the Dallas Arboretum, the Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) trips that teach people how to safely ride busses and the light rail and the John Bunker Sands wetlands in Crandall. The wetlands have a very cool live Eagle Cam that is constantly watching a huge eagles nest. Log on at the right time and you might catch both eagles or an egg in the nest!
