For the Love of Chicken
The Teachers’ Lounge
There is nothing that shows our priorities better than how we spend our time and money. It appears that a chicken sandwich reigns supreme as we transition from Summer Break into the school year. If the recent media coverage of the Popeye’s Chicken Sandwich is any indicator of society’s priorities, we are in trouble.
Between the local news, social media and random chatter, Popeye’s new chicken sandwich is apparently the Holy Grail of deep fried poultry. Customers have waited more than an hour in the blazing hot sun for an opportunity to sample the golden crusted delicacy. Others arrived before the restaurant opened to score a sandwich before Popeye’s ran out. Clearly, this sandwich has been the hot topic all week.
Wouldn’t it be great if all the parents chasing that chicken sandwich put the same energy, money and effort into meeting their child’s teacher or attending parent-teacher conferences? Wouldn’t it be awesome if these parents hung around school campuses before the doors opened to help keep students engaged, out of trouble and safe? How awesome would it be if parents stood an hour in the hot sun to make sure the crosswalks were supervised?
